Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) in London, was raised by her mother, grandmother, and her godparents. Her father left her family. In her early years she was suffering from an obsessive compulsive disorder, suffering anxiety related to associations with words. Ford became attracted to acting in her teens, and joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford gained entry to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, however, she decided after one week that she wasn't a good choice for this school. Ford made an application to the Central School of Speech and Drama and eventually secured the position she wanted on her third try. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler, a regular character on Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993. But, before then, Ford made a television debut as a character in Surgical Spirit in an episode that aired in 1991. Ford took the professional name Catherine Tate. Tate was featured in a variety of television programmes like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning in the Nineties. Alongside her usual stage work, Tate was a part of with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate was recognized as a stand-up comedian and was added to her repertoire in the year 1996.
