Audra McDonald's artistic talent is unparalleled by her variety and breadth as a vocalist, and an actor. Audra McDonald, who won six Tony Awards in a row and two Grammy Awards in 2015 was listed as one of the Time magazine's 100 Most Influential people. The president Barack Obama also awarded her the National Medal of Arts -the most prestigious honor bestowed to Americans for achievements in this field. Blessed with a luminous soprano and an incomparable gift for dramatic truth-telling the actress is just as at ease on Broadway as well as on the stage as in her film and TV roles. Alongside her stage performances, she also has many facets of her career, including music producer and concert artist. She has a regular performance schedule in some of the top venues around the world. McDonald was born to a family with a strong musical background in Fresno, California. She received classical vocal education at The Juilliard School of New York. After graduating, she received her very first Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured actress in musical for Carousel at the Lincoln Center Theater (1994). The time following She was honored with two additional Tony Awards as a featured actress for her roles on Terrence Mcnally's Broadway debuts Master Class (1996) and Ragtime (1998) which gave her the total 3 Tony Awards at the age at just thirty. This role also provided the platform for the Olivier Award nominee 2017 London West End debut. Additionally, she set the record for most successful wins for an actor, she was also the first actor to be awarded the award in the four categories of acting. McDonald's other theater credits include The Secret Garden (1993) Marie Christine (1999) Henry IV (2004) 110 in the Shade (2007) Twelfth Night (2009) in which she made her Public Theater Shakespeare in the Park debut film, Shuffle Along or The Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed (2016) Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune (2019) as well as Ohio State Murders (2023). The Peabody Award-winning CBS show Having Our Say The Delany Sisters The First 100 Years which began to introduce McDonald to the television audience as a dramatic actor. Following her appearance with Kathy Bates, Victor Garber and other actors in the highly acclaimed Disney/ABC remake Annie in 1999, McDonald appeared as the role of a regular on the network's Law & Order Special Victims Unit. McDonald won her first Emmy for her performance in"The Wit," the HBO versions of the Pulitzer Prize winning play Wit written by Mike Nichols, starring Emma Thompson. In 2003, she re-appeared on television but this time on Mister Sterling produced by Emmy Award-winning Lawrence O'Donnell Jr., with Josh Brolin. Beginning in 2006 she was part of the cast of the show on WB called The Bedford Diaries and over the course of the season, she was a recurring role on NBC's drama series Kidnapped. McDonald got a 4th Emmy nomination in her performance in HBO's film-special of Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill in 2016. The Bite is a drama featuring six episodes that are based on an epidemic, produced with Spectrum Originals & CBS Studios. McDonald starred alongside Taylor Schilling & Steven Pasquale. In 2009, she was the U.S. Attorney Liz Lawrence on CBS's legal drama The Good Wife. In 2018, McDonald played her character Liz Reddick as a regular on Paramount+'s The Good Fight. She earned three Critics Choice Award nods for her performance. The actress is currently an actor in Julian Fellowes' historical drama The Gilded Age, which can be seen on HBO.
